Using antiaircraft weapons against ground targets is a perfectly valid and realistic tactic. During Operation Reindeer SWAPO used 14.5mm AA guns in the anti-personell role against the South Africans
After the bombing run had done its damage, reservist parabats, organised into four under-strength parachute companies led by Colonel Jan Breytenbach of 32 Battalion renown, were dropped into combat. The fierce and bloody battle that ensued was anything but a walk in the park, lasting a good four hours longer than expected, with the SA forces encountering anti-tank rifle fire and determined resistance from Plan guerrillas in the trenches and from batteries of heavy 14,5mm anti-aircraft guns fired horizontally.

Viljoen recalled: "It is true there were some women and children, but completely untrue to say they made up most of those killed. Swapo had some women in uniform and there were also girlfriends of fighters present.

"When I was standing at the main objective in Cassinga, there were many buildings around me that were apparently magazines, because they were all exploding. "

One veteran parabat, describing Cassinga as "a scene from Dante's Inferno", recalled the bitter battle: "… among the dead was a female terr[orist] dressed in East German fleck camouflage. She had been shot in the neck while firing at the 'Bats' with an SKS [semi-automatic carbine]".

Later, referring to the struggle to knock out the anti-aircraft batteries, he said: "The Bats were in terrible trouble, any movement drew heavy fire. The terrs manning the guns were no 'refugees', the enemy knew their job and there were wounded South Africans out in the open."

The Russians used Shilkas in Chechnya and Afghanistan to protect thier tanks against rebel anti tank teams and clear out high elevation enemy positions

SPAAGs and AAA in general (and particularly Russian/Soviet designed examples) are almost always designed with a secondary ground fire capability and are intended to be used in the roles you deem to be so wrong for them.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

AAV's are 1 man for gameplay reasons - our teams are already stretched thin on maps like Kashan. 2 AAV's = 2 guys. You have 30 guys to do other things.

If 2 AAV's = 4 guys, you'd only have 28 guys to do other things. Minus 1 for CO would leave you with 27. Add a 3 man CAS squad, and you're down to 24....

It goes on and on...

It's just a gameplay balance.

Basically, IMO, AAV's are an essential role but are not nearly a focus of the battlefield like Tanks are. So the need for "realism" with a small role vehicle is just not worth the trouble it would create in game.

I don´t have problems with it being one man, the driving you get used too.

However what I don´t like is that people drive off thinking the are a one-man-uber-pwn-machine, and really, on kashan you need tank backup.

Then people complain the aircraft are owning them, well, because their AAVs just drove straight to the bunkers to get some infantry, with no tank support and not looking at the sky.

just 1 maning the AAV takes away from the point of PR game play. and some times you need to be shooting at that A-10 and drive at the same time. but its a little hard to keep track of ware you going will your aiming at the A-10 trying to take it down before he kills all of your teams tanks. because the people that fly are your team keep on crashing. and all the AAV 1 maned end up being killed by tanks. so im ring running on foot with the AAkit facing off a A-10" and will im moving the AAV as im shooting so i dont get my self killed as well. i end up runing over a group of poor squad guys and get kicked for TKs that i did not mean because i can't see ware im going.

but with an driver you just yell over the mic "DRIVE NOW A-10!" will your aiming at the A-10. and the driver gets you out of there with out geting you any TK's and even pop off some smoke to give you cover.

also if the aav have an driver it would allow the AAV to give better AA support will on the move.
