Have a look in the community mods section. Lots of stickies in there with all you need to know.

Just be warned it is very time consuming. You often get into the little details and completely forget about the rest of the landmass.

As a fellow mapper, best of luck. The Editor can be quite good when it does work, and all you have to do is let your imagination run wild.

Check google maps for realistic landscapes areas you're interested in. :) http://maps.google.com/ It's great for a top down view, but a simple Internet search can bring up street/side views as well, for further map reference.

If you're interested in Iraq, UK_Force has some nice ref pics in a convenient .rar file: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-m ... style.html

Good, keep going with it and don't let really too many change your mind. Think hard and long, once you get in too far just make sure your happy with it.

add me, rhino, Dr rank or any other of the Dev map team to X-fire or PM us if you have any questions ( which you will ) :)

other than that keep reading tutorials and checking the community section of the forums, both extremely helpful resources

Smeg: Fuzz commands a lot and promotes good teamwork, db flips vehicles, Bosco is an all-round nub, Outlawz is an SP whore, Nickbond is a friggin ninja and Rhino gets kicked for being a n00b.

If you do all the tutorials, follow every boring and basic line, and make a basic map with the help of the links, you will learn enough to get started. It will probably look like a big hill in the middle of open space with a Chinese and American base. I did it and it was enough to make me grasp the basics. It is all about having the passion, and dedication at the end of the day, and it's a long process. I am not passionate enough to dedicate months of my life to single maps, as many of the brilliant mappers on here do.

It's also time consuming, so if you have a lot going on in life then remember your priorities. :)

Thread moved.

Good for you Craz3y|Assasin, If you look back this is how I started. I said "I can make a cool map" and just went for it. My goal wasn't to become a Dev or anything. The goal was to make a cool map even if the team didn't want it.

A few thing to know:
  1. Read, Read, and Read. Almost all the info you need is out there
  2. BACK UP daily, the editor will crash more times the that, but at least your only losing a day not a week.
  3. Keep your modified .con files in another directory (init, sky, etc). The editor will over write everything, every time.
  4. I have two working directories. Your first ones under your WORKING : pr_edit/levels and the others under your TESTING : pr/levels/. Under the pr/levels is where I keep my back up con files under a directory called pr/level/LEVELNAME/assets
  5. Take all feedback. Every commenter will have there own agenda and will tell you about it and why its better. But at the end of the day its your map.
  6. Post images but not game play at first. Its like MIB, well get in touch with you when the times right. :-P
  7. Have Fun, your not going to make the .85 release and you might not make the 0.9. Just do the map for fun and the playability will come into its own.

Good luck man - be prepared to use almost all your free time on it. Its hard to explain just how much time it takes.
Theres not much to add to the advice above - dont give up!
