yet another sniper thread

Post by Lord.Helmet »

Hi,

I've been playing PR for a while and I think that something has to be done with the sniper kit. I really like what came up with the new releases and I think it's on its way to feel very realistic.

I really agree about the "settling" time the sniper has to do before firing and I think it is a great addition but it should be more precise after this time. Considering that there is no bullet drop up to 600m, the rifles aren't precise enough, even shooting from a prone stance. Right now the sniper is effective in a 250-300m range (and you can still miss a stationary target). At this range people can spot you and their assault rifle can get you easily. This isn't very realistic... Real sniper can shoot targets up to 1 mile.

I did some test with battlerecorder and shooting a 250m stationary target from prone and being immobile for much more than 8 seconds without moving the crosshair gives you a shot having a 1-2 foot diameter circle of accuracy on your target. That is more than enough to miss a headshot. Yes, sometimes you will hit it just right, but it isn't always like that. I'm not even talking about 500m, it isn't accurate at all. Also, this isn't a bullet drop factor, some of my shots were hitting higher than my target.

When I am playing sniper, I go far away, to a spot with good cover and good visibility on the map and I observe most of the time with my binocs. I try to inform my team about threats coming. I honestly rarely shoot but when I see in a range of less than 400m one of my squad being annihilated by a guy alone who drove a jeep near them and switched to the .50cal (means he is completely stationary) and I pull out my rifle, wait my 8 seconds without even moving the crosshair, THAT shot, THAT shot should be 100% precise.

I mean I played sniper quite a bit and I too have had good shots (lucky shots considering what I'm saying here), but I missed too. Too much in my opinion because of the deviation of the rifle. Please don't tell me I don't know how to shoot, instead go create a local training server, start battlerecorder and try it out for yourself. You'll find yourself lucky too after seeing it.

I know the devs want to create a realistic gaming experience and I too don't want to see an overpowered sniper kit but with the settling time it is impossible to go head front with the enemy or staying at close range. In that department the dev got it just right. But when it come to do the sniper job (recon and taking out major threats at long ranges) it should excel there.

I've read some good idea like having a deployed mode for the sniper. Great idea that should increased the rifle accuracy. Also, I think that the binocs should have a range meter. Now to know the target distance you have to set a point on your map... where is the realism in that if you still can see your distance with that, why not include a range meter.

Thanks for reading :) and sorry for my bad english.

Having got back into sniping bit more, I agree with you, good news here is times will be dropped for settling completely, to 6 secs rather than 8 seconds. But I do think, with no bullet drop factor, that every shot after waiting should be pin point accurate. As there is no wind in game, we are assuming that us as a sniper in game would have calculated stuff like that, so IMO that isn't much of an argument.

Welcome aboard. I think you might want to wait and see what has been done in the upcoming patch. :)

And your English is more than okay. :)

Great, I'm glad to hear that.

Can't hardly wait for the patch then :-)

The sniper would be even better if it wasnt this inaccurate, meaning that I have never got shot by one. Only killed them with marksman.

I appreciate the thought and work that went into the kit so far, I just think it was forgotten that if you were a sniper in RL, you would be fully trained and know your rifle like the back of your hand.

Not taking haphazard shots in combat, with no real idea where your bullet will be hitting.
I agree, but in real life, snipers can also miss. The British Army do not teach 'one shot, one kill' any more to their potential snipers in Brecon. Only experience and fun by wind/elevation tables can bring snipers up to this level. That's why we have Master Snipers :)

I hope that we'l see a one shot one kill in the body in the next release, because in long range i aim in the body because the crosshair of the wepon is bigger than the head, and always need 2 shoots to kill the guy (kinda vBf2 works, with the diffrence that if shot in the head they cant be revived), i see him being hit because when you hit someone(with the MEC rifle) you can see him shaking for a second, then most of them either go prone and wait for my next shot :D or either make a run for it making it impossible to be hit.
I don't have any problems hitting my targets when i'm above them(like on a mountain or on top of a high building)

The deviation model has been tweaked for 0.85, so you should see a difference in settle time and first strike accuracy for sharpshooter/sniper weapons in the next release :)
