Vehicle speeds
This is a discussion mainly about the non-sprint speed of vehicles
I was thinking that the vehicles in PR may travel too fast when not using shift.
Its not that they can't go this fast IRL, its that when they collide with things, even small things, they are shrugged off. When IRL a collision with a solid wall at 45mph could very easily result in injury to persons inside the vehicle and perhaps damage to the vehicle itself (vehicles get damaged in PR in collisions...but not much unless its a bike or barbed wire is involved)
Also, vehicles are very hard to keep at a steady but speedy pace to allow gunners to engage without being a sitting target.
So, do vehicles in PR travel too fast when not using shift?

Personally I thought the cars went to slow.

Re: Vehicle speeds
He's not talking about lowering the top speed, just the normal speed, afaik. However, I think the problem is as you say rudd, cars can shrug off frontal impacts, yet going off-road abit completely destroys themIncomplete Spork wrote:Personally I thought the cars went to slow.
I'd like to see a change so that frontal impacts can total vehicles (immobilize them, and maybe make them catch fire at times, but not completely destroy them). I'd also like to see them get a slightly better suspension system.
Though could you clarify what the non-shift speed has to do with it? Except for the last part, which I support a reduction in the non shift speed.

Re: Vehicle speeds
well, my understanding is that the non-shift speed is the 'cruising speed' of the vehicle, and that the shift speed is used when trying to escape a dangerous situation move around open ground etc.
tbh, part of my thinking is affected by Generation kill (please note, I didn't use it as a reference) where the humvees seem to move so desperately slow when moving through the streets as they negotiated the various obstacles.

Re: Vehicle speeds
Oh, I see, so having a lower non-shift speed would allow more flexible handling and such? I like it, just give the shift speed near infinite "ammo", so that you can go top speed when you need to.Dr2B Rudd wrote:well, my understanding is that the non-shift speed is the 'cruising speed' of the vehicle, and that the shift speed is used when trying to escape a dangerous situation move around open ground etc.

Re: Vehicle speeds
If shift wasn't just a temporary boost of speed it would be nice to reduce the speed of vehicles in general if you ask me.

Exactly, make shift it's own gear shiftAnRK wrote:If shift wasn't just a temporary boost of speed it would be nice to reduce the speed of vehicles in general if you ask me.

This may seem wierd, and CRAZY(but it works!)
I drive with me X52 Saitek, with the throttle, being my gas/brakes, so I can control my speed, and my turning radius, it's so much fun when you use a throttle to control your speed, instead of tapping W alot

Re: Vehicle speeds
I've done that before, too. But it doesn't offer the same results as Rudd's suggestion, which wouldn't require everyone to have a joystick to drive at different speeds.Maverick wrote:This may seem wierd, and CRAZY(but it works!)

Re: Vehicle speeds
my problem with joystick is that I can't find the zero,
e.g. I need to stop FAST
I put throttle to zero and use the S key to apply brakes
But my joystick is **** and hasn't really gone in to zero so the jeep keeps moving someplace
gunner eats my ear off
But! I will say using joystick to apply force to remain stationary on slopes is pretty sweet.
Does the X52 Saitek have a way of helping my find the zero of the throttle?
(student loan has arrived and its got to be spent on things worthwhile
)

Rudd, that loan is for the survival of you until next term
Do not do it
But yeah, I think it would be a good idea actually, have the veichle go slow, unless you press shift, so you have 'gunner speed' and 'gtfo speed'

Re: Vehicle speeds
Maybe adding buttons for 10%,20%,...100% would work pretty good if there is no
joystick.I don't know if this can be added/implemented.
Take tanks for example - you don't always want to go max speed -hard to see for the
Crew Commander (driver) zoomed in.I haven't tried a joystick - good idea.

Re: Vehicle speeds
there has been multiple discussions on such a system, I think people tend to call it a 'gear' system. There was one community modder trying to do it, but I think he moved on to stuff that works better.SocketMan wrote:Maybe adding buttons for 10%,20%,...100% would work pretty good if there is no

Re: Vehicle speeds
I would like a lower cruising speed. It would be easy to control the top speed with shift.
But now as the cruising speed is pretty high is hard to shoot things as gunner.

Yes it does actually, only visual though but you soon get a feel for it.Dr2B Rudd wrote:my problem with joystick is that I can't find the zero,

There are markers to show the percentage of throttle on the throttle itself.
As you can see here. Of course, if you do as much pilot whoring as me, you don´t have to look.

Re: Vehicle speeds
I dunno, the insurgent trucks blow up pretty easily. If the vehicle HP was lowered then all the humvees and whatnot would explode after hitting too many bumps as well.Dr2B Rudd wrote:

Re: Vehicle speeds
I decided to shelve the idea of buying a cool joystick cuz I've found a new way of driving vehicles that works really well for me,
Using my old Microsoft Sidewinder joystick that dates back to anchient sparta, I've set acceleration to the y axis, and left/right to the rudder so if kinda feels like flying a helocopter without going up and down
me and Alex were pwning up on west fallujah firing on the move and dodging fire, twas awesome and we also picked a couple of squads up and dropped em off etc. We only died because we rammed a destructable fence and glitched causing us to explode.
Works really well, though you're hand gets tired
