On the one hand mumble can let you know roughly where everyone is by the sound of their voice, on the other hand standard voip you can hear what they say no matter where they are, surely that's an advantage?

The two can be used at the same time.

I'm starting to think this could replace TS at some point...

IAJTHOMAS wrote:You can use both i suppose, like people sometimes use both VOIP and TS. However here the ingame voip or TS would be like radio comms and mumble talking to someone.

Want ammo from the guy next to you not in your squad? mumble.
Want supply truck from across the map? Use TS or ingame voip and ask CO for support

Want to tell the chopper your in to go to X place, but approach from y angle so nme in Z can't see you? Mumble
Want a chopper to come pick you up? Again TS or talk to the CO in ingame voip.
OOOOOOooooooo Me like :P

I wonder.... Could PR be Mumbleified? i.e. VOIP totally disabled and Mumble implemented into the game for everyone, so (like said) if you're close to someone (even enemy) they can hear you... Would be pretty badass whilest sneaking behind enemy lines to actually have to whisper to your mates . Then those with TS can use that like radio comms and if not just settle for text chat.

Course that isnt possible but hey, lemme dream :P

-Well, I think one reason is just because players currently using mumble are teamwork oriented, probably all community members, with a good deal of experience. In addition, the positional audio should give players using mumble a good advantage when it comes to identifying enemies as you can just say "at my location" and people will know based solely on the audio direction instead of having to identify your position, then the enemy. There may also be more efficient communication in the squad(again, due to positional audio) and there may be more players in-game using mumble they were cooperating with.

(lol, I'm on the official PR channel now, heard a Russian(I think) guy say "mumble schmumble". No idea why that cracked me up)

Yeah both mumble and bf2 voip can be used at the same time but with mumble, the options "force center position" (settings--->shortcuts tab) allow you to talk to everybody in your channel no matter where they are. The bf2 voip can be used to talk to everyone in your squad not using mumble.

For my part, I have 2 questions:

- Can we expect the overlay to be allowed by punkbuster anytime soon??

- Which file (and its location) stores the settings of mumble?? (when you want to uninstall mumble you can choose to keep your "preferences and databases" so I guess it's the file(s) remaining if you choose to keep them)

Thx

wait a minute...

is there a problem using Mumble overlay, I mean... for Punkbuster?
I got Mumble overlay, and it's very usefull, you can see who's talking... I don't think Punkbuster should see that as a hack, but what if it's not considered yet?

I don't want to be guid banned just because I'm using freakin mumble overlay... :(

Using overlay at least 4 days, no problems on different servers and AFAIK if smth is wrong PB just kick you for using scripts(happened with TS overlay)

I understand from the installation procedure that the overlay can cause random kicks by pb. That sucks because the overlay is really well integrated and usefull.

My brother got kicked 3 times in a row 20 sec after joining a server (tcombat) for "corrupted packet flow". He then disabled the overlay and on the same server everything was fine :(

Is NOBODY in this thread interested in an easy solution for User Registration Management? Or using a Forum Database for Mumble Registrations?

The current solution of DIRECTLY editing the database feels to me as if you had to remove the casing on your TV and fiddle with the innards to change channel.

There must be an easier way than this.

I've been reading this thread for the past few days and am curious about some things
- If this is meant to mimic spoken speech, I assume that players in tanks at the moment can still hear everything around them as if they were on foot
- can the speech options be divided into a radio communication which wouldn't be broadcast to everyone but to select individuals such as squadleaders and spoken communications which everyone, hostiles included would hear within a given small radius

hahah, just came off TG, every1 in the same mumble server. the best thing is...Voip bug was present (unintentional afaik) so all we had was mumble

Ejod, ran up to east city, I hear voices, "those enemies to the south at the building?"

I say "kingkong, u on mumble?"

he say "yeah, watch out to the est behind the building, there are enemies there!"

I yell back "enemies NW as well!"

epic.

or on Kos, enemy APC turns up, my squad dies...I survive cuz I'm awesome and I shout "eat green smoke APC!" and I can hear their taunting laughter in return...for real.

I really hope that someday Mumble comes with PR. That would be the best like I said before. Is great reading all these storys about people using mumble already!

That was Spaz and I in the BTR-60, we could hear you all yelling "F(&# you!), lol.

But having just played with almost 40 people in the same Mumble channel it's even more evident than previously. We need our own specific version of Mumble with fixed setting that can't be changed. Too many people are just going to the sticky, seeing the download link, and disregarding the entire installation guide. Then they complain about being able to hear people all over the map

Yeah that was epic in the APC hehe.

And a BIG x2 on people saying that mumble sucks and then not even having it set up right...

So is it better to have both teams on the same channel or to have them in separate ones?
Seems like both in the same is better judging from aboves comments! :p

First Mumble experience:
Image

-We were 5/6 to begin with but Ninja's a big n00b ( :p ) and some guys crashed so we ended up with three in the end. And we still got first place, lol. Sadly didn't have any other squads with Mumble so the most awesome aspect wasn't tried out, but enhanced comms greatly. Had two fireteams at one point and not talking to the whole squad all the time was great. We were on a pretty crappy team but it was a lot of fun.

Is it possible to use mumble like Teamspeak as well ? LIke can you have a button to discuss tactics with a nearby squadleader and one to radio air support like you would in TS ?

-Yes, there should be a "Force Global" something hotkey option in the settings.

But that would require the teams to be in seperate channels ...

Unless pilots put a phantom in the team channel and everyone makes a bind to speak to that channel in order to speak with the pilot. And Vice Versa if the pilot wants to speak to ground forces.

And I'm loving this program, the experience is amazing !
Make SURE that in the audio configuration, on the "Audio Input" tab "Idle AutoMute" is set to Off and that you have no shortcuts set in the "Shortcuts" tab of the configuration.
