Sniper Suggestions

Post by GreySpatter »

Howdy!

May I ask why accurate MilDot reticles and rangecards have slipped through the otherwize tight net of military accuracy in this game?
If I had the software and the know-how, I'd get right on the creation of a ghillie suit that actually works in the game, and a proper scope/reticle for the sniper rifles.
(maybe a system that determines what color on the suit, based on the map type? green/black suit in dessert, like it is now, is just fail.)

If i could dictate how it should be, I'd say:
3.5-10x zoom with MilDot reticle, no laser rangefinder (but a datacard with info on how many Mil's different targets filled at different ranges), and a simmilar function as the map, only with ballistics data (bullet drop at different ranges and Mil hold overs and mil lead for running targets).
In real life, a laser rangefinder can be observed with NOD's, and is considered a high risk when used against a well equipped enemy, especially at night.
This idea would allso bring more realism and need for actual skill and planning, wich is the essence of sniping.
Allso, the option to use tracers would be nice..
And (I just don't run out of ideas :P ) maybe a system that analyzed where the target was hit, and consider if the user was wearing body armor?
A bodyshot at 800m on a insurgent without BA should be fatal, just ask Sgt. Gilliland, he killed an enemy at 1250m with a 7.62x51 rifle.

Any thoughts?

I thought it was pretty fail as well when they removed the Ghile suit. I mean, yes, these are more of support snipers and not Uber-L337 Forward Reconnaissance snipers, but its pretty close.

Whenever I'm sniping, I actually bother to follow that one suggestion in the startup- "Always operate with a spotter, and only engage high priority targets. Your primary objective is to relay information of enemy movements to your team."

So when im hiding in the hills and a squad leader-less squad is looking around for me with binocs, I really like the fact I look alot more like a bush than a soldier. Bring back ghile :(

A lot of what you're suggesting is hardcoded and impossible to implement.
Such things would include seeing laser designation trails externally, selecting tracer/non-tracer rounds, and working ghilie suits...
As for the reticles and rangefinders, PR has the help of a few experienced military advisors.

the problem I believe, and the reason it was removed, is taht kits do not render at distance.

i.e. the suite would disappear at a range like all other kit geos. So it would look like a dude with a sniper rifle anyway.

This can't be avoided afaik.

People were thinking that they were invisible thanks to the magic suit. However now, they know they aren't without visiting this forum and therefore use much smarter locations to snipe from because they finally understand that grass and ghille are unreliable forms of concealment in BF2.

Removal of ghille, because of the reasons I have outlines, was therefore a logical and useful choice.

I agree, it's a really fun mod too. Accurate zeroing and MIL-dot scopes. Plus, it's so much fun to see that tracer fly up, then fall down on an unsuspecting enemy 1500 meters away :p (I killed fueurwaffen that way, so much fun :D )

Did they somehow get ballistics working?

Yes but only with tracers. The problems arise when you have a combination of ball and tracer.

Yeah, I figured that was why they removed it. But it still was very damn useful when enemy started passing nearby you or you were being hunted. I have been passed by when hiding in the relatively short grass on Qwai when we still had suits.

EDIT: Perfect example-

I would just like to add that if anyone would like to make a decent reticle and/or rangecard, i can provide pictures and data on the subject.
Thanx for tip about the wookie mod. I'll check it out.

How about this one:
instead of waiting 5 secs before you can take your shot ACCURATLY(wich i tested, and i didnt need to press 3 to get a good shot!) THIS TIME, you DO press 3 in order to get a steady shot. Its realistic, cuz snipers use the same thing when theire sniping. Its part of basic marksmanship. Breath, breathe out.
Again, and again. SHOOT!
Kill...

I just tried the Wookie Mod, and I was facinated by the tracer rounds. The reticle, however, was not mildot at all.
If the developers could make something like this:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e185/ ... CF0134.jpg

And make it dimentionally accurate, so ballistics tables and mildot rangefinding worked, that would take the sniper role to a new level.

Grey, in the general discussions page, check my PR sniping guide for over 600m shots. You will see that currently, its zeroed in at 600m and the bullet drop is not that much for over that zeroed in range. As far as i can tell, its not perfect, but it is allright by my standards.

Or we could all agree to use the same aspect ratio.

Not likely.

Would be nice if the sniper was removed and changed for another class.
