The knife as a combat weapon has seen very limited use since WWII. So for a reality mod, having people legging it across streets and diving from buildings to get those glorious knife kills its absolutely rediculous.

I suggest a rethink of the knife, maybe intergrate it with the building system somehow, I don't know, it's just a last quick thought. Any ideas?
Ya it would be nice if you could use the knife realistically for cutting barbed wire removing grenade traps etc.

So far the only thing you can do with the knife besides kill is destroy rally points and fire bases.

Personally... I like the knife for the 'fun' aspect that it retains in the game. Plus it's one of the few ways to silently 'off' someone. I realize the OP is simply saying change it to be critically wounded rather than kill (although I don't like the 5 stab suggestion) which I sort of agree with, but TBH % of kills with a knife in-game is probably what.. like between 1-5% [less]?

I'd much rather they take out the sniper before worrying about removing the knife kills :)

Great idea for the grenade traps, but cutting barbed wire? I don't think even a nice new combat knife could do that with any ease, you'd need wire cutter, that stuff is majorly strong. Anyway, yes perhaps someone using a knife to disarm booby-traps is plausable. Although I don't actually know the techinque of disarming a grenade trap, never mind atempting to do it with a knife. I asume you just cut the trip wire.

I agknowledge that there needs to be "fun" in the game, but I certainly don't have fun when a sneaky soldier, creeps behind and takes me out by slicing my toes. Although knife kills only acount for a very low percentage of kills, I more than often find them more frustrating than anything else. And when I do manage to get a knife kill, Im usually left rather disapointed. Sorry, but the knife is completely bogus in a reality mod in my opinion.

My personal opinion is that it's fun and should stay.
Knifing 2 times when first would get them to critical state could be OK too i guess.

Ya most military issue bayonets/knives have that hole specifically for using it as wire cutters and those things are very strong metal not the same as regular knives. Depending on whos knife it is.

If you get stabbed in the back of the neck which is pretty much what most of the knife kills are ingame, you are gonna be down quickly if it were RL. These aren't some little pocket knifes, they are heavy duty Ka-Bars and combat knifes built sturdy and heavy and designed for killing.

It doesn't matter if your throat got slit or your you stabbed in the neck region, you would be incapacitated and ingame, the quicker thing to do is die, so it works out IMO.


And to the poster who says knives haven't seen wide spread use in combat for a while now, that is basically true for PR. Knife kills are very rare in PR just like they are in real life. Vanilla is a different story though.
Even if you do get close in PR, the lag in the game usually causes you to stab them twice.

BR2 engine for PR is not completley perfect ........ it has it problems .. but It could be usefull to make the knife criticaly wound some one Go black and white and still some wat of a chance of turning around and shooting the person who kinfed them before bleeding out

That's possible in BF2 too by simply having the knife cause 95% of damage instead of the current 9000+% (dunno how much health points or w/e you have in BF2).

Though I'd not even say this is the point. If you were sneaking up to someone, you deserve the kill - but in this case you should usually be able to stab two or three times without trouble anyway (maybe increase stab animation speed or something, not sure what "rate of stabs" you can have right now), or aim for the head.

The Stab should have a more realistic feel about it, such as the sound of the knife cutiing through the flesh, and so on.

And having the guy who gets stabbed yell "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

In all honesty, I doubt you'd hear a knife cutting flesh. It's one of those noises that doesn't stand out much less on an active battlefield.

No no no. If a person is close enough to knife you than they would surely get behind you and slit your throat thus killing you. It is designed to simulate that. I thought it was obvious.

Who would use the knife then. Just shoot them to death instead


I always thought that the knife cutting through human flesh simulates someone going behind someone and slitting their throat.

Really guys, if you get knifed you deserve to lose you life. Because if its made to only wound then just remove it all together. Same thing with the zip ties, you cant zip ties an opponent that fast.
