Using an image as terrain

Post by The_Turkish_Moose »

I couldn't find a tutorial which explains how to use an image as the initial terrain layer to use as a template (like the way rhino built muttrah city). He used a satellite image on his terrain and worked over it. How can I do this aswell?

I'm sure you are aware of this one:

In there you will find pretty much exactly what your thread title is :D :

that tutorial can be a bit confusing and troublesome. If you are only using it as a template and not for ground textures you can simply save your image as the groundhemi of your map and then work in groundhemi mode ;)

just check what file the groudhemi is and replace it.

That's much easier, rodri :D . I will certainly give that a go on my next map (if/when I find the time ;) ).

Actually there where no decent satellite/aerial photos of Muttrah back then so I was forced to use a road map, which I had edited my road plan on top of:

Ye, that is a simpler way of doing it but the groundhemi is only 1024x1024 where a 2km map has a colour texture of 4096x4096 which is 16 times the detail so if your using a high rez satellite img/aerial photo then your better off using it. Although you can possibly save the groundhemi in this size or possibly even above just for use in the editor but not sure about that.

I have saved the groundhemi at 2048 and it worked , not exactly sure if it translated much into the editor though.

but anyways if your using it just for a template/guide its fine imo
