hello,
i am currently replacing the terrain textures with newer and high quality once, but i am not sure which format i have to save them. the textures are located in common_client/terrain/textures/detail

but no words about terrain textures
anyone can tell me which DDS format i should use ?

Kinda depends. Most are definitely DXT1(what they should be). But we also have some DXT5 for example our wet puddle textures.
If you use WTV you can open dds files with it and see in the bottom what DXT version it is, what mipmaps they have etc. Very handy

save them as 32bit-A8R8G8B8 .dds without MipMaps and place them in /your_level/Editor/Colormaps/
then open up your Editor make a slight change to the colormap and save so the new textures get compiled to /your_level/Colormaps/

He wants to alter detail maps though...
But what amok says is true, that's the method to alter color-maps, which will probably increase the quality more then detail maps will really, then again those are limited by their size so I doubt it will be super noticeable.
