New skysettings for some maps

Post by SAM609 »

Hey guys !
So what I basically want to suggest in here is adding/replacing ambient lightmap in some of the maps that are too bright or too dark or simply very dull colored ! :? ??:
Just for example Fallujah west is so bright , roads are shining more than sun in that map 8-) >>

This is what I think is more natural atmosphere for a middle eastern city ( considering that I actually live in here ;-) ) >>

It doesn't even require a full re-lightmapping for a lot of maps that have a good shadow map , so it is not that time consuming imo !

Cheers

This is awesome, so many maps need ambient lightmap and sky textures updates and will make playing on many old maps feel fresh again. Please implement them to some degree!

Also, anything that improves viewdistance and reduces fog is amazing!

I've no problem with Silent Eagle, that's what makes it unique. Day version of it will totally change the map I think and I'd rather have it as it is but with some maps that have weird lighting like Fallujah, this will be epic.

So to get this right, you are suggesting to just change the light settings not the actual lightmap?
Lightmap is what draws static shadows on the ground etc and takes forever to generate (ask Rabbit how far Masirah is :p )
Light settings are just how bright or dark the map is. If you dont change sun position you can keep old lightmap (shadows).
Changing light settings is fine, but i dont think anyone will generate new ligthmaps as it really is a pain

Been thinking about this for a while but never got to posting... Wouldn't it be better to set a bright/longer vd lightmap setting/viewdistance setting for maps that have 2-seater jets. E.g. Silent eagle and hades peak are quite useless for such jets with a low vd. With a higher vd it'd be an enjoyable asset.

Could still have lower vd/night for layouts with only 1-seater jets or attack helis.

lightmaps= Pre-rendered shadows on the ground and buildings.
skysettings= contains all the pretty stuff you see. The colors of everything.
skybox=skytexture= texture in the sky
fog= fading objects and terrain away into a particular color of fog. Has all sorts of settings. Mostly color and brightness values.
viewdistance= hard cut of rendering. Also where lazers and all that stop working. So if the fog setting is bad, you sometimes have lazing working beyond the fog.

Let's all use the same terminology please.

Viewdistance is either maxed out performance wise, or is put lower to provide better gameplay. Usually infantry layers/maps do this. Asset maps usually go as high as possible. Specially jet maps.

As far as altering sky settings, I'm not very keen on doing so. The original mappers went for a certain look and style of their maps and layers, I don't want to go against that. We do update them from time to time though. Like we did with kashan, or some of the reworked maps in v1.4 for example. But usually not drastically changing the color and look of a map. Unless the mapper himself does so of course. But small changes like you did on Fallujah seem to be alright :) Feel free to send over the sky.con of that one ;)

No idea what you are talking about, lightmapping is super quick and easy, 10/10

Performance issues.
