17km Possibilites/Limitations?

Post by Greenie Beanie »

Obv you cant put too many statics on a 17km map, but i was wondering what extent we can use these?
Would it be possible to fit say 3 maps in 1? Like we could have a beach landing type few flags, where your landing on an Oman WAC type beach, then need to take a couple bunker flags further inland, then moving down a highway and capturing an outpost or 2 along the highway, then the highway will come into a city which we need to cap, followed by a village or 2 and a base.
This aint a map suggestion just wondering how many flags/statics we can fit into a 17km square map before it gets too laggy?

So far, AFAIK, issues regarding terrain on such maps have not yet been resolved.
Who want to get things done will find a way and who dosen't will find an excuse.

yes you could have a beach with a buch of flags on it, then a bunker etc behind it... whats stopping you from doing it I dont understand what limitation you are asking apart from performance?

The map can be tweaked in many ways to make them more optimized in suffice for quality, like on Al Basrah the lightmaps are 1/2 the size cos otherwise users get soo much lag with all the new objects epically.

You could make a 4x4km map a entier urban map, as long as you used the same objects over and over (ie, building meshes) and used no / very low ligthmaps, and very low, karkand view distance etc you could get away with it but hard to say.

the terrain of the map performance wise is the same as a 2x2km map as its just that, but stretched.

more of a city than a town :p

but ye, afew small towns here and there on medium or maybe high lightmaps wouldn't hurt.

Yea well what would you think of a map like that, Rhino? Kind of like a 3 missions in one map - eg taking beach gives you a foothold, taking highway gives you vehicles, taking a town with AA in it gives you aircraft. Pushing through towns and cities and outposts till you get to a rear base.
I guess i aint seen qiling yet so yea

Interesting idea Greenie, it would lend more of a campaign feel to the map. I'm not sure this type of map would work on a public server but on a teamwork night or tournament it could be brilliant.

I'm more interested in seeing a massive Afghanistan map. A heavily mountainous region contested by British troops with a river valley running down the centre with poppy farms on the banks leading to the ultimate objective of capturing the Taliban village stronghold. Basically Kashan with an infantry focus and mountains rather than little sand dunes.

I wanted to start mapping a long while ago and did a lot of experiments. But until I can do something at least 20x20 km, It won't be for me as you can't do anything realistic without this. You can barely fit a realistic airfield in 2x2 km.

big maps shall be the downfall of this mod. /prophecy

but seriously, im not even sure that 17km maps are a good idea. i mean, they would take a huge amount of work to design and build to a good standard, and they're gonna be awfully lonely with only 64 people running around on it. they just seem like a waste of effort to me when the current map sizes (mestia, albasra etc.) seem about right to me.

plus performance issues for people with computers that arent top spec.
