[HELP] MICH/ACH Reference Pics

Post by ReadMenace »

This is my first shot at 3D modelling; I thought I would attempt to make a new kit geometry, starting with the MICH/ACH helmet for the US Army faction.

Here's a screen cap of my progress:

As you can see, I don't have the best reference pictures. I was wondering if anyone might own a real or replica ACH and be willing to take some quality photos for me to use.

Any other modeling advice is welcome.

Very good attempt for a first modeling project.. good idea as well.

let me know when you think the model is done and I'll help you optimize it :)

Hehe.. well its simply getting rid of polygons that isnt really needed. Looks a bit like it has quite a few polygons where it could do with very little. But no need to worry about this now :)

Started over for a third time, did this all in about 2hrs. Mirrored it, though I have no idea how to meld the central vertices.

Trooper, I've 'finished' the helmet itself, though it still needs the suspension kit on it, which I have no idea how I'm going to do. What should I do next?

Hmm.. not 100% sure what you need to do now..
But what would be a good idea is to post a wireframe of it so we can get rid of some of those unneeded polygons :)

To give you an idea of the current ingame ones.. this is the MEC helmet so you can see how many/few they have used.. I know that computers have increased in performance power since BF2 was released, but it would be a bit wierd for a helmet to stand out by having 2-4X the level of detail of all other helmets :)

Image

If you arent able to get hold of a soldier model to test the straps on, I can supply you with the model if you tell me what formats blender can import.
(the same goes for the helmets if you need them for reference)
If not you can get away with having them hang from the helmet or something :)

Thanks Z!

I just realized this morning that I can probably import a player model from BF2 to size things on. I'll try it out when I get home from work. Thanks for the ref pic of the MEC hat too.

No problem.. dont know if there are any import/export tools for bf2 for blender though.. if not you are probably able to import ".obj" files that I can send you the helmets and soldiers as.

A series of questions:
Who did the kit geometries for the Brits?
Is there a limit on the number of kit geometries for a faction? (The possibility of having unique elements for each each kit, a higher level of detail and immersion.)
Are all items in a forces kits located within one file? (Similar to how the skins for a factions' kit geometries are located in one file.)

My goal in this is to make a new set of kit geometries to add detail to and differentiate the US Army faction from the USMC faction. Ideas that I'm toying with, include:
2 Helmet Geometries (With & without cover)
Ballistic Goggles (Up & Down)
Shemagh/Keffiyah w/ helmet (Ala Brits)
Sniper kit WITHOUT ghille suit.
Groin & Arm Guards
Nape Guard
More to come.

The arm protectors would be nice, too (The vest can be skinned on)
