A new type of "Sniper Ghile"

Post by cfschris »

Alright, so I know some people want the ghile suit back for snipers. While this is a good idea, most of the time it is completely pointless (as kit geometries disappear at long ranges).

With this disappearance at long ranges problem, I've thought up a solution. Since the problem is blending in at long range (foliage also disappears long range), the BASE skin for Snipers should be textured to match those of the surrounding terrain.

That way, the textured camo "skin" of the sniper makes him much more invisible, increasing to the realism of making the sniper look like the terrain.

Also, I dont think it would be a halfbad idea to throw back on the ghile suit over that new skin texture. It always makes me feel safe when baddies pass nearby me :-D

And the ghili suit is pointless when it comes to urban maps or even sitting on a mountain with bare rock.

i think ghilie is important. if u r scouting at 200 meters, the ghilie will do the work, i think
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

An issue with this is, that when looking at distant players, they usually take on a fairly generic black-brown, black-green appearence. Changing the texture of the sniper model wouldnt really solve this.

Not to mention, Textures of soldiers do not change with the kit.
Since they are dependent on the specific player model, it means that you would have to spawn in as a base-class (rifleman/medic/officer etc) that would have this very camoflage change you propose, which means every class has the potential to wear a ghilie...which is fail.

its not pointless when enemy is very close to you and ur trying to hide. any way why cant it just be added for the coolnes factor. now i know alot ppl gonna say PR aint about "coolnes" but come on. every sniper gets a gehlil suit. why cant it just be added. no harm done at all

Mongol is right.

You spawn as rifleman, you hae rifleman base texture and kit geo

Get sniper you have sniper Geo, but Rifleman base texture

Ok not all snipers use ghilli suits. Alot of the time snipers are wearing standard infantry uniform, i've seen alot of pictures of British army snipers looking exactly same as infantry just with an L96.

I've never tried this, but what happens to the player who is "commander" and he enters the command bunker? does his onscreen model disappear? Insurgents have the little outpost command bunker. Does the character disappear upon entering this bunker?

If so, give the sniper a deployable guilley suit that he can throw on the ground and "enter" (i.e. put on) and become potentially more invisible. maybe he can only deploy one every 5-10 minutes and can only have one onscreen at a time and keep them side locked (of course).

If shooting from this "suit" is an issue, make suit like a "vehicle". I know you can shoot from a vehicle (sunroof of car).

If the suit is a "vehicle", make it move only as fast as a snail (i.e. sniper crawling around). be sure to give the sniper no protection while in this vehicle too

What is the down side?

Thats been suggested before frank, maybe not in same concept but generally sniper hides etc and wasnt very popular. Also when a commander enters the command post he is not invisible, you can see him leaning on the desk.

snipers in PR should represent their most common role, section/platoon level sniping. (https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f22-mi ... v-gaz.html)

in which they don't wear ghillie suits.

Why do people care so much about a ghillie suit? Half the time when I see snipers it's because they're sky-lining themselves at the top of a hill and a ghillie suit won't help that at all, and as far as I know they're not widely used apart from for special forces type missions. Even if they did work they'd still stick out as dark dots in the distance.

Because everyone has a little spot inside for being the long range silent (arguable) killer.

Anyways, linking my old old thread because it makes a lot of sense and its relevant to this thread (in a way, I also want people to read my thread :roll :)

Thanks, but what is the down side?

if the original problem is that a soldier's kit doesn't draw at distance, then the solution is potentially something other than soldier kit (for sniper only)

perhaps if I clarify, the "vehicle" I refer to above would look more like a blanket lying on the ground with a human sized hump underneath and with a sniper rifle & Scope sticking out (perhaps when manned - otherwise it's a blanket looking thing that resembles a portion of the map terrain). Seems like vehicles render plenty well at distance. Wouldn't this work?

I am curious as to the game play issues with not being feasible (the above or other already mentioned similar solutions that I didn't find), other than not popular.

by the way, if the above did work and got implemented, then good luck to the sniper's spotter!!!

Personally, I make sure I never do that.
I am 100% sure the ghilie have saved me numerous times in vBF2, as I always make sure I have something dark behind me, + I am usually in/behind a bush ( in vBF2 behind works perfectly, shooting through the branches as they sway from side to side :) )
I have had entire squads moving past me this way.
Once, one of them even crouched beside me and started shooting at something, never knowing I was there.
Two grenades later they were all dead :D

This problem would be diffcult to implement, in some cases peoples low texture settings may not sure they 'blending' as well as higher-end rigs, which could lead to low end rigs showing the people up a lot better than the other rigs.

Also, what about different terrains, the ghillie suit was quite flexible fitting into all terrains, will a base texture be as flexible in jungle and desert, or are you thinking two different ones? Myslef, preffered the ghille suit as it was good at what it was meant for and actually worked in camoflaging you, now its quite easy to pick out a lone sniper on the ridgeline.

Just my 2 cents
