still BAD lag on some new maps in 0.91

Post by seph567 »

Hi there.
I still have REAL trouble with heavy lag on some of the new maps. I know there are some treads about this issue but I am also writing this because I tried a lot of fixes and read most of the threads and maybe someone can figure out whats wrong because of my hints.

first of all: u can check out my system specs. shouldn't be a problem there. I can play GTA4 and FarCry2 all on ultra and will not drop below 30fps at any time.

I am not talking about modarate fps drops e.g. from 100 to 30-40, I am talking about drops from 100 to less than 2-3 fps wich makes the game not playable.

maps with lag: gaza beach, lashkar valley, fallujah (in 0.9, not tested in 0.91), beirut.

Now what I have noticed:

- game options don't affect the issue very much. If I play lowest settings possible (<800x600 + all on low + 50% sight) fps 100 all the time. when I play 1280x1024 all on high with 8xAA + 100% sight fps is around 100 too, droping to a minimum of 50 when looking in an wide open area + jumping and doing freaky stuff.

- massiv fps-drops (near 0 fps) only happen when the server is populated + one of the maps mentioned above is played. NO fps drops on empty customserver at all !

- fps-drop happens when I look in the direction where most of the players are located. My own position on the map doesn't seem to affect fps very much. even if I look into the citycenter I have around 50 fps if there are no players in this direction.

- fps drops happens even if I don't see the players. even if I am standing with the face to a wall the game begins to stutter when there are players (or maybe vehicles?) located in this direction. If I turn around fps bounces back to normal instantly.

- Fps-drop can be fixed for a few seconds by alt-tabing out of the game and switch back
(indicator for memory or video-memory related issue? btw. I have read the sticky about memory problems but it didn't help)

I had a similar Problem with FarCry2 and have read something about the V-ram overflow after a long time of play. the v-ram is not cleared automatically and so the videocards memory fills up over time depending on the size of the textures. when textures has been set to ultra the stuttering happened after 10-20 minutes. when reducing the textures to "only" high the stuttering happend only after hours (enough for the game to crash because of other reasons ;) ). but in PR the lag is not reduced very much by decreasing the texture-size. and the problem happens a lot earlier. just a matter of seconds.

so I hope one of u guys has found the roots of evil in here and can help me play some of these new maps after all that time ;)

It may be ( just a guess) your Creative Soundblaster X-fi Xtreme Audio drivers. Check for the latest ones and use search for "X-fi Xtreme" to review possible fixes/work a rounds here in the forums.

If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files.

Good luck

I followed this link Re: X-fi performance drop with battlefield2 - Creative Labs

and I have to say that the game runs much smoother now and I recieved nearly a 20fps boost in city-areas (70 instead of 50 :P ) but it doesn't solve the strange problems with the maps mentioned above. so if u have any X-FI cards I highly recommend you this link even without bad problems, just for an fps increase. but still not the one I need :D

It was probably "renderer.lockfps 999" command that enabled higher framerates for you as BF2 1.5 patch updated OpenAL libraries to the latest version already ;)

- Updated BF2OpenAL.dll from version 1.1.1.0 to version 2.1.8.1

Sure sounds like a network glich.
Check your router. Do you have 'packet inspection' turned on? Turn it off if you do.
Some routers with 'packet inspection' turned on can also trigger a disconnect when game data or voip traffic triggers a false "ping flood"attack and the router shuts down needed ports cutting off packet flow to protect your network,.
So try turning packet inspection off to see if that helps.
If you have a busy network you can also get dropped if your packets are consistently getting delayed due to high traffic.( your ping jumps way up from time to time)
You can check your ping with a free tool like Plotter Freeware 1.1
Always download from sites you know and trust.
Always scan new downloads before you run them as well.
If your running Xp you can tune up your internet connection with TCP Optimizer to maximize throughput.
check out speed guides web site
click here to use their TCP/IP Analyzer
results will show if you can improve throughput.

Having a router like D-links gamers lounge, that can prioritize traffic( they call it GameFuel), can make a night and day difference.
This GameFuel improves your online gaming experience by ensuring that your game traffic is prioritized over other network traffic, such as FTP or Web. This is of course much more helpful on networks with more than one user, but if you like to download bit torret or other large files in the background while gaming you'll be glad you have one that can prioritize or 'shape' traffic.

So the question is where is the bottle neck? Is it inside the network (your PC to your router) or outside (modem to game server)
Inside a better router should help.
Outside improved throughput should help.
Good luck

Sorry I didn't mentioned that I have moved about 3 weeks ago. I had the problem before with another router @ dsl 6000. now I have a new cable modem @ 32mb/s and pretty good pings around 40 all the time.
So I am pretty sure that it is not actually a lag-issue. and most of the maps are perfectly fine. no stutter at any time. always the same 4 maps only ;(

and the most interesting part to me is, that it is not comming randomly or stuff like that. it always happens on these 4 maps as soon as I start entering+facing the more populated areas. and its gone if I alt+tab out and back in. at least for a few seconds.

but I really appreciate ur help mate. keep on going. u will find the answer, I can feel it ;)

You have a quad core. Have you tried setting BF2 to only run on a single core? ( one your system rarely uses like affinity 4?)
