[HELP] Editor crash when tring to view minimap

Post by ChiefRyza »

Well, after running a quick lightmap to check out some things on my 4km map, every time I go into the editor, into my map, then press the 'View' or 'Reload' buttons for the minimap, the editor crashes with this warning:

This has never happened before and I cannot possibly think of what I did to make it happen (Besides lightmapping). Removing the lightmap folder in my level folder did not help either. Removing the colormap and detailmaps also did not help.

Well this happens every single time I try to look at the minimap in the editor. I have 4gb of DDR2 (3.5 recognized)
Made a backup of the map (obviously) now im doing trial and error deleting every piece of detail the map has.

your simply running out of memory when generating your minimap. Happens lots and is explained in my "perfect minimap tut" I believe, let me check :p

Depending on your map size, objects in your map, how much ram you have etc you may or may not be restricted for memory. If you are doing a 256x2 or 512 map with over 1gb of RAM, you should have no problems, if you are doing a 1024x2 map, may be some problems, if you are doing a 1024x4 map you will need all the RAM you can get, min of 2gbs I would say cos my PC struggles with 3gbs.
Probably touches on it a bit more in there if you scan though a bit more but basically even when just generating a normal minimap, you will want to free up as much memory as possible before you do, epically if you have things like lightmaps etc also being loaded with the map since they will eat away at your memory just loading them, leaving less memory for you to render your minimap.

Most likley reason why you still can't render your minimap after removing your lightmaps folder is because you haven't restarted your PC and as such, memory is still being clogged up with **** from before the crash.

So ye if you want to generate a minimap, you will in most cases want to restart your PC first etc and I wouldn't generate minimaps on the fly though mapping, only generate them when you need a new one :)

Something I always run into is when I have overgrowth and undergrowth on its almost sure I will crash when saving. While not the same issue its something to look into. Re-load your file and only turn on overgrowth.

Cheers Rhino, I was freaking out for a minute there :-P
Seeing as it was doing it to multiple maps I tried it makes sense as well. As I haven't gone through the later steps of making the map (just adding statics and jungle in atm) I missed that stuff on the minimap.

ye, also keep in mind when you do get round to doing it the "perfect minimap" way with my scripts, you will need to free up a lot more memory if your making a minimap for a 1024x2 or epically a 1024x4 map since my scripts for them generate lots of minimaps and as such, it eats away at a lot more ram :p
