Yea on vertical ladders there are bars which hold the ladder to the wall about every 5 rungs. Making impossible to slide down a ladder with your hands all the way around the vertical parts.

Theres no problem with climbing. The problem is with sliding. Would you have slid down the ladder in your situation?

Cranes. Theres no internal way to go up and down them, just the ladders.
